In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful!
Respected president of the meeting: Hon’ble Justice D. N Chowdhury, Chief Guest of the function Hon’ble Justice Ranjan Gogoi and distinguished invitees, ladies and gentlemen.
I on behalf of Justice Shafiqul Haque Memorial Initiative, welcome you all to this function. Justice Shafiqul Haque former acting Chief Justice of Assam was a doyen of legal fraternity of India in general and Assam in particular. During the latter part of the year 2013, we had made a formal request to the Department of Law, Gauhati University to explore the possibility of documenting the illustrious life and work of Late Justice Shafiqul Haque. The Department responded to the request positively, and Dr Stuti Deka, Associate professor of the department volunteered to take the responsibility of editing a book titled “Justice Shafiqul Haque – Reflections and Juridical Thoughts”. Concurrent to the work related to the publication of the book, the initiative started an endeavour to design a dynamic website in memory of Late Justice Shafiqul Haque: www.justicehaque.org. To meet the larger interest of legal fraternity of North East India, the website was designed primarily as an online e-magazine of legal articles, news and research papers. M/s Empyreal Publications and M/s Flugel Soft India Pvt Ltd extended technical support in both the above projects viz. the publication of book and the website.
Today, we are privileged to have amongst us Hon’ble Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Judge of Supreme Court of India. Hon’ble Justice Gogoi has kindly consented not only to formally release the book and the website, but also to deliver a talk on “The Challenges facing the Indian Judiciary”. The topic of his talk this evening is extremely relevant in the current context and I sincerely believe that, same will enlighten all of us present here.
We have tried our best to extend invitation to leading citizens in general and legal fraternity in particular. We are honoured to have amidst us a number of judges, advocates, officials of judiciary, faculty members of Law Colleges, students of law, members of the press and family members of late Justice Haque.
I welcome you all once again and thank you for gracing this occasion.
